OUR STORY

REDEFINING CONSCIOUS FOOTWEAR THROUGH OUR DISTINCTIVE APPROACH TO DESIGN, SUSTAINABILITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Vandrélaar was founded with the clear objective of merging timeless design with quality craftsmanship. In a world oversaturated with fashion fads and throwaway culture, we’ve taken a step back to focus on what truly matters to us - slowing the fashion cycle down by designing with integrity, producing less, and using materials that are better for the planet.

An anagram of our founder's names, Vandrélaar is a nod to her European roots and international upbringing that inspire the brand’s aesthetic and philosophy. The Vandrélaar world is one that embraces the hybrid identities that shape all modern-day women, and strikes the right balance between effortless style, versatility and longevity.

We offer both vegan and leather styles, and design our collections in limited quantities to avoid stock surplus and waste. What matters most to us is that our shoes are unique, made from high-quality European materials, and make our customers feel like the best version of themselves season after season.

OUR VALUES

SLOWING FASHION DOWN

Our footwear is designed to become permanent pieces in your wardrobe - made to last, while celebrating the fair treatment and craftsmanship of the people that create them.

We strongly believe that our responsibility as a brand is to promote slower consumption habits. That's why we refuse to follow the traditional fashion calendar and are saying no to seasonal sales. Instead, we take our time to design and create our products with integrity, and strive to order stock that meets demand.

As a European business, keeping our suppliers local is important to us. Not only does this give us more control and visibility over our supply chain, but it allows us to support the European footwear industry and celebrate local craftsmanship. Our shoes are handmade in Portugal by a small artisan, female co-founded factory. We've made sure to partner with a factory that shares our values, cares for its employees and the environment, and follows EU regulations.

RESPECTING OUR PLANET

Sustainability is at the forefront of what we do - from design to delivery. Our materials are sourced from reputable European suppliers and are consciously selected for their durability, quality, and gentle impact on the environment. In our efforts to reduce waste, we produce our collections in limited quantities, avoiding stock surplus and the promotion of overconsumption. In addition to this, all our deliveries are plastic-free and carbon-neutral, as we offset each shipment on behalf of our customers.

As a business, we are constantly working on improving our environmental footprint. We believe that transparency is the key to sustainability, and consciously avoid marketing terms or greenwashing trends when communicating our journey. Instead, we focus on sharing our knowledge, providing our customers with facts, and being open about where we stand and where we want to be.

VEGETABLE-TANNED LEATHER

All of our leathers are tanned by reputable European tanneries with waste management systems in place.

We've made the conscious decision to use vegetable-tanned leather for all our leather linings. Tanned using natural, tree-derived tannins and without the use of heavy metals, this leather is fully biodegradable within 15 days. This makes it the safest, most hypoallergenic and natural leather not only for tannery workers, but also for our customers to wear against their skin for everyday wear and comfort.

VEGAN LEATHER

We only use high-quality, European-sourced vegan leathers that have a significantly lower environmental impact than standard synthetics.

In our efforts to reduce our global reliance on crude oil and petrochemicals, we've sourced animal-free leathers that are solvent-free, water-based, or made from bio-based polyols and recycled polyester. Unlike other synthetics, these materials are prized for their durability, breathability and environmental credentials.

LINEN

Linen is made of bast fibres from the flax plant, a resilient crop that requires little pesticides, fungicides or fertilisers, and can be grown in moderate climates with no irrigation. Flax grows best under traditional farming methods where crops are rotated, and helps replenish the soil with nutrients - providing re-wilding habitats for various animal and plant species.

Less resource-intensive than cotton, linen is fully biodegradable, renewable, antibacterial and hypoallergenic. Breathable, it also helps to regulate body temperature and is even a natural insect repellent!

DURABLE RUBBER OUTSOLES

We've made the conscious decision to use rubber soles on all our shoes. As much as we love the look of leather soles, they tend to deteriorate much quicker, especially in wet climates - and they definitely cannot be used on our vegan styles!

As part of our mission to be more environmentally friendly, it made sense for our shoes to be as durable as possible, slip-free, and built to withstand wet weather. Durable soles mean fewer repairs and a longer product lifecycle!
